today don imus was fired for what he said on his radio show, al " big pimpin" sharpton and jesse jackson are patting themselves on their back over this. they keep talking about what you can say and what you cannot say. my question is in a free society where everyone should be equal who gets to decide what is free speach? no matter what you say you can and will offend somebody.
This isn't a freedom of speech issue at all. Don Imus can say whatever he wants. And guess what, CBS can fire him whenever they feel like, because Imus doesn't have the right to be heard widely or to be paid millions for running his mouth off. It wasn't the government that kicked him off the air. It was his employer, and they decided he was too much of a burden to keep.
I really couldn't care one way or another. Imus isn't even remotely funny and it has nothing to do with how 'controversial' he is. I'm surprised it took this long to can the old fart. From what I understand he's said far worse before this anyway. Most talk radio is just stupid IMO. *shrugs*
what i mean, that the way that some folks are acting its like they got hitler canceled not some old dude that most people never heard of. the girls on the team probubly had to google him to find out who he was. do you think any of the people involved really care about what he said?
Yeah I agree with that assessment. The whole thing is overblown, and Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson piss me off with how much effort they expend over such trivial shit while letting far more important things slide. They are such cherry pickers. Always seeking to profit from the cheap outrage instead of truly standing up for social justice. They aren't MLK by a long shot.
I think it was a chance for Sharpton and Jackson(especially Sharpton) to get some media attention. I despise rasicm and see it often living in Tennessee. Imus's remarks did piss me off esp that he said jigaboo although refering to a Spike Lee flick that I never heard of got under my skin. Some say that it is that he is just bad at humor. I dont know that all this shit should of happened to him, but if he is truly racist I will agree with what has happened to him.
Peace
neither one can fix any major racial issue so they go after flashy little ones so that it looks like they are doing something. don imus said something very stupid in the heat of the moment, that if he was not an old white dude no one would have cared, suspend him yes, fire him no. I REALLY HATE THIS P.C. BULLSHIT!!
I am an alum of Rutgers University and I know a few of the players personally. It was bad enough they had to deal with a heartbreaking loss but then they were attacked by Imus for no reason. Those young ladies were hurt and embarassed on a national level.
You have to understand that Sharpton and Jesse Jackson did not get involved until after the University failed to stand by the players initially. Do they play up to the media? Sure they do, but that is not the point. The fact that Imus, who is not a stupid man by any means, felt so comfortable to describe those young ladies as "nappy headed hoes" is the issue. Imus showed that he is a racist and a bigot. And you know what, he has the right to be those things. However he needs to deal with the consequences of that behavior. CBS and MSNBC also has the right to not support his show for now. I am happy he got fired but if this was the back in the day, I would be the type of brotha that would have rolled with Huey P and Malcom before his trip to Mecca. That is all you need to know about how I would handle Don Imus.
Also, do you really think we live in a free society?
Yeah, I think the saddest part of the whole thing is, we all know he'd still be on the air if the sponsors hadn't dropped out. If they stick around, CBS and MSNBC keep him around. Nobody would ever be able to convince me that they would drop their #1 nationally rated simulcast program just because the host said something offensive. In a perfect world, yes they would, but we all know this was done because of money. As for Imus, listen to some ESPN, the Dan and Keith show particularly. Keith worked with Imus before, and his comments were not exactly flattering to Mr. Imus. I just wonder what the over/under is on how long it takes for Imus to show up on satellite radio or something.
